A really clean, only city driven, colored-bumper early 00's Hilux SW4 (4Runner).

An off-road capable SUV is the best city vehicle. I envy my Montero and 4Runner owner friends, they drive around without a care in the world while I cringe at every speed bump and pothole riddled street.

I don’t know if I could live with it.

I don’t see how you would live without it. They’re great trucks, simple and reliable and capable of doing many fun things.
As long as you don’t need to be anywhere fast. And you’re not real concerned about keeping it flat in the corners.

I’m quite used to trading reliability for all-around comfort. Those and Defenders are quite appealing to me though, for whatever reason

They aren’t comfort oriented, I won’t try to sway you there, but they have a special kind of comfort that you don’t find in many places. The comfort of not worrying about anything. Someone dings your door, oh well. You hit a pothole, oh well. Is there a stream that needs crossed, an obstruction to climb, or a horde of protestors to drive through? It will do it without complaint.

Well.... you're not going anywhere fast. Or for that long without gas. There's miles of body roll. But the interior is well featured to be a 20 year old truck and they're dead reliable. I have the same chassis but mines the SR5 with black flares on a silver body.
